The Turkish parliament has passed a new law that will enable the release of nearly 90 thousand prisoners from its jails to relieve their overpopulation and protect the prisoners from the spread of the virus. Half of the prisoners will be temporarily released under supervision, while the other half will be released permanently.
Turkish opposition parties and human rights activists have criticized the new law due to the fact that prisoners convicted under terrorist charges, including politicians and journalists arrested in the failed coup attempt of 2016, will not be among those released.
More than 120 journalists are currently imprisoned in Turkey as well as thousands of political prisoners. The exact number is unknown.
