Russia: Space Agency Advisor Arrested for Treason
Former journalist Ivan Safronov has been accused by Russia’s security services of transferring state secrets to NATO.
Russia's security services (FSB) accused Safronov of passing state secrets to NATO member state intelligence services and provided classified information on military and technical issues. He joined the space agency as a consultant in May. The agency said it was assisting the investors.
Last June, a legal proceeding was opened against an article that was published in the Russian newspaper ‘Kamersant’, which allegedly included state secrets. The information came allegedly from Spronov himself, who wrote about a weapons deal of Su-35s fighter jets to Egypt by Russian state manufacturers. The report was later gagged and removed from the newspaper's website.
Safronov's father, also named Ivan, was a well-known army commentator in the same newspaper. He died after falling from the fifth floor of his Moscow apartment in 2007.
