Seoul’s Mayor Found Dead: Ally to the #MeToo movement, accused of sexual assault a day before The mayor of Korea’s capital Seoul, Wen-Sun was found dead following an extensive police search. Seoul Metropolitan Police announced the body was found near Mount Bogak in the north of the city, not far from the city center, where the last signal from his cellphone was recorded. Hundreds of police officers, assisted by drones and police dogs, participated in the search operation. In the evening, crowds gathered outside Seoul University Hospital due to unconfirmed reports that a Park had been taken there. The official cause of death is unknown, and it is still unclear whether his death was linked to local media reports, according to which one of his secretaries had filed a sexual harassment complaint with the police the day before. Allegedly the secretary told police investigators that several other women working in the municipality had undergone similar sexual harassment by Park. Seoul police chief Choi Ik-Su said in a briefing to TV reporters that there was no suspicion of criminal charges, although a more in-depth investigation would be required. He confirmed that an investigation had been opened against the veteran mayor before his death, but did not elaborate beyond. The mayor, who was one of the country's most senior politicians, largely retained his activist character during his tenure, criticizing what he described as the country's growing social and economic inequality and the connections between big business and corrupt politicians. He won one of the earliest sexual harassment cases in South Korea's history as a lawyer in the 1990s, and he also strongly advocated on behalf the so-called " comfort women," women forced to work in Japanese military brothels before and during World War II in Japanese occupied Korea. Park also praised women for their bravery after a series of women accused powerful politicians and policymakers of sexual misconduct as part of the 2018 #MeToo movement. According to local reports, Park left his official residence around 10:40 p.m., wearing a black hat and carrying a briefcase. Kim Ji-Hyung, a local government official, said earlier that Park didn’t report for work today for unknown reasons and canceled his schedule, including a meeting with a presidential official.
