Lebanese News Anchor Quits During Live Newscast: “The Country is a Graveyard for Dreams”
Wassim Oraby, a news anchor at the Lebanese network Tele Liban quit tonight (Monday) during a live broadcast due to the hard situation in his country, two weeks after the explosion in Beirut, which left the country broken and worsened it’s economic and political crisis. “I’m leaving the country because I’ve had enough of you,” Oraby slammed at the country’s politicians.
“This has been my last newscast to you, after 11 years that I’ve been on this screen, in the national news channel,'' Oraby said at the end of the newscast and surprised his viewers. “11 years, in which I covered events that, unfortunately, were mostly sad and it was all scalded into my memory, like bombings, liquidations, inside wars. Today, my career here has ended not because the channel has given up on me, but because I can no longer stay in a country that is a graveyard for dreams. I leave because I am disgusted by you.”
Oraby, one of the most popular anchors in the state, thanked his supporters: “I wish to anyone who left that they may find land again, to which we will return to live in dignity and not in humiliation, to which we will return not only to be buried.”
