The Threat to Archaeological Sites
Author: Regavim Movement
Adjacent to Khirbet Kuhrkash, which is next to the Ariel Industrial Zone in Samaria, Palestinian residents recently made an illegal grab of state land and survey land.
For those who don’t know, Khirbet Kuhrkash is an ancient historical site. Its historical artifacts indicate that a settlement existed at the site between the First Temple period (around 800 BCE) and the end of the Byzantine rule in Israel (7th century).
The most impressive piece of history discovered at the site is probably an ancient cemetery, where many graves date back to the times of the Second Temple (from -352 BCE to 70 CE).
When we went into the field, we discovered excavation work that threatens the archaeological site. Although it hasn’t been destroyed yet, Khirbet Kuhrkash is in danger of joining the list of Jewish historical and archaeological sites in Judea and Samaria that have been destroyed, ‘rebranded’, or damaged by the Palestinian Authority.
We’ve made an urgent request that the Civil Administration put a stop to work on the ground. But, as you could probably guess, the Israeli authorities are in no hurry to enforce the law at the site. And in the meantime, the excavators continue to work at a rapid pace and without disturbance, taking over more and more land.
If the Civil Administration doesn’t uphold the law, forgetting its duties, we’ll have to take legal action. Even if others already have, we refuse to give up in the Battle for Area C.
We shall continue to protect the State of Israel’s resources, to promote the rule of law, and to advocate for Jewish national rights throughout the Land of Israel, including Judea and Samaria.
