The Chef Who Feeds Holocaust Survivors
Since the coronavirus pandemic hit New York City, successful chef David Teyf found himself with a lot of spare time and little to do.
This prompted him to begin cooking and delivering food to Holocaust survivors confined to their homes across the Big Apple.
“If my grandparents were alive, who would take care of them?” Teyf thought to himself, recalling early childhood memories from Minsk, Belarus, where his family owned a matzah factory behind his grandfather’s house.
After contacting the Museum of Jewish Heritage, its cafe’s kitchen reopened shortly after 2020’s Passover with a few workers, and Teyf embarked on a mission to never leave a Holocaust survivor hungry again. The Shabbat meals and deliveries reminded Teyf of the risks his grandfather took when preparing matzah for the Jews of Minsk under Soviet rule. “I always see my grandfather smiling down,” the New Yorker chef said of his fulfilling endeavor.
