Mike Lau, an American citizen whose daughter was a flight attendant on a plane that crashed into the North Tower, said the opening remarks immediately after the moment of silence, describing "the unbearable grief and crisis of confidence that still persists," feelings the family has experienced since the disaster.

"When we recite the names of those we have lost, my memory goes back to that terrible day when I felt evil landing on our world. But it was also a time when many people acted above and beyond routine," he added.
