The Middle East is awaiting the announcement by the new president of the Emirates, Muhammad bin Zayed MBZ who will be his heir apparent.
According to estimates, MBZ intends to declare his 40-year-old son Sheikh Khaled as heir to the throne and thus break the convention that the role passes between siblings and not sons.
This decision to appoint a new heir is expected to have an impact on the internal system in the Emirates and it is likely that if the son is appointed this decision will create some frustration among MBZ's brothers who are all currently in senior positions.
If MBZ nevertheless decides to continue the tradition of appointing a brother to the position of regent, the chances of Sheikh Tahanon are the highest. Tahanon has extensive ties with the Israeli defense establishment and has significant economic interests in the Emirates.
