The agreement is the result of secret contacts that took place between the two countries in September: a state-owned company will set up a huge solar farm to generate electricity in the Jordanian desert and Israel will buy electricity from the Jordanians. In return, Jordan will buy from Israel twice as much desalinated water as it does today. The signing is expected to take place in Dubai under the auspices of the Biden administration.
Israel, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates are expected to sign an unprecedented agreement next Monday in Dubai to build a huge solar power plant in the Jordanian desert to generate electricity for Israel. In return, a dedicated desalination facility for Jordan will be built in Israel on the Mediterranean coast. The two countries will purchase from each other the electricity and water that will be produced at the two facilities, said five senior Israeli officials involved in the issue.
The agreement to be signed next week is the result of secret contacts that began between the three countries following the "Abraham agreements" and even more so after the formation of the new government in Israel. This is the largest and most unique regional cooperation project established between Israel and Jordan since the signing of the peace agreement - in part because most of it will take place in the kingdom.
