UKRAINE CRISIS: Crimea 2014 and Ukraine 2022 - What connects the two events?

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid was now asked in News 13 whether Russian aggression was the result of American weakness, and replied: "I do not think so. This is an ongoing confrontation. The Russian invasion of Crimea was many years ago."

Here's a riddle for us: What American administration was there in 2014 during the Crimean occupation, and what American administration is there now, in 2022, with the threats to invade eastern Ukraine?

And what did the Russians not do between these two periods?

The facts speak for themselves: Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, one of the most strategic and sophisticated leaders in the world, then recognized and recognizes today a weakness of America pervading every corner of the globe.

So it was the Democratic Obama administration that just stood by and watched the Russians "pluck" from Ukraine without a single shot the Crimean peninsula. The paralyzed Obama did not prepare in advance for Russia's sophisticated strategy, known in the security world as a "gray area conflict", and failed to respond to it in real time.

The Russians understood who they were dealing with in light of Obama's general lax policy, which included, among other things, throwing the United States' allies under the bus for Iran.

Today, even the democratic Biden administration seems to be giving up in advance any attempt to prevent a Russian takeover of Ukraine (I estimate only on the Luhansk and Donetsk regions).

This is when the Russians threatens this time with a direct and attributed attack, and precisely when the Americans have the option to take advantage of their deterrence more easily compared to the unattributed conflict in the Crimea.

First, Biden makes sure to talk only about reactions in the form of imposing American and European sanctions against Russia, which does not exactly raise concerns among Russians (does anyone remember the sanctions imposed on Russia after the Crimean occupation?).

Second, Biden blurted out at one of his press conferences that a "small invasion" does not mean complete invasion. A gift Putin could not have dreamed of.

Then yes now - Biden, like Obama his old boss, throws the United States allies under the bus in favor of surrendering to Iran.

Between those two Democratic presidents, Republican President Donald Trump has served. The same one who was claimed to be a "Russian agent" and a "Putin puppet". In the face of this president - who has pursued an attack policy against Iran and China, and made a U-turn from Obama's conciliatory policies - Putin did not dare to do any tricks.

There is no empty space in the world of international relations. One power loses its power, and the other comes at its expense. Once the American eagle radiates weakness, the Russian bear manages to grab and crush it.
