How did Deghayes come to misunderstand the religion that every last Western non-Muslim leader is complacently sure is completely peaceful? Why do all the Muslims who misunderstand Islam all misunderstand it in the same way?

A mosque leader made a stabbing motion with his hands as he told his congregation that ‘Jihad was compulsory’, a court heard today.

Abubaker Deghayes, 53, was captured on CCTV delivering a speech to his Brighton Mosque congregation that encouraged Islamic extremist violence on November 1, 2020, jurors were told.

Ben Lloyd, prosecuting, told the Old Bailey today: ‘Evening prayers had just finished at the Brighton Mosque. There were about 50 or so people present, including children and young adults.

‘At the end of the prayers the defendant stood up at the front of the congregation and gave a speech. In that speech the defendant was quite clear.

‘He said Jihad was compulsory, an obligation. He said Jihad by fighting by sword was compulsory until the day of resurrection.

‘The prosecution case is clear and straightforward. By standing up at the front of a busy mosque, and by quite deliberately saying Jihad by fighting by sword, the defendant was encouraging terrorism.

‘Encouraging violence in the name of Islam. And if the defendant’s words were not clear enough, he also made a stabbing gesture with his hands.’

Jurors heard the passionate tones of Deghayes’ speech as the mosque’s CCTV footage was played. ‘There is no god but Allah,’ Deghayes said.

‘Allah is more powerful than you. You, idiots. You non-believers, idiots. Allah is more powerful than you. The non-believer…is an idiot; he’s stupid.

‘Jihad is compulsory, upon you, you, you and you until the Day of Resurrection, whatever the British Government thinks, whatever Prevent thinks, whatever Israel thinks.

‘Send to the sea. They can go and drink from the sea…Allah curse their fathers, OK?

Deghayes, originally from Libya, continued: ‘Jihad, Jihad, Jihad! Jihad is compulsory. Jihad by fighting by sword that means this Jihad is compulsory upon you.’

Mr Lloyd explained that ‘Jihad’ can mean many things, but suggested it, in this case, meant ‘a violent struggle in support of Islam’.
