Algeria lays between the Hammer (America) and the Anvil (Russia)
Doron Peskin, Middle East Expert 13.02.2022
With the winds of war blowing in Europe, it is unclear whether American efforts to find a replacement for Russian gas will succeed. It is likely that in the event that gas supplies from Russia cease, alternative sources will be found that can provide a partial solution.
One of these sources is Algeria. Already today the North African country is the number 3 supplier of gas to Europe (after Norway and Russia). Algeria has the option to increase supplies but if it does it will jeopardize its intensifying relations with Moscow.
This is not a simple dilemma.
Algeria, which is in an economic crisis, needs revenues from gas exports, but the problem is that last year it signed an agreement to increase gas production with a company from Russia.
