Alan Jope, the CEO of Unilever Plc, said Thursday that the consumer goods giant is “fully committed” to continue doing business in Israel.
By making this statement, Jope distanced himself from the announcement of the U.S. ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s from earlier in the week, which led to a global storm boosting anti-Israel groups and activists.
The Vermont-based company stated it will halt sales of its products in “occupied Palestinian territory” -- referring to Judea and Samaria.
It is unclear whether Unilever will compel its subsidiary ice cream company to revoke its controversial decision. Speaking to investors, Jope stressed that Ben & Jerry’s has a long history of social activism and its independent board made the decision on its own.
