There is no shortage of tense moments in Lebanon and today the weekly cabinet meeting was not held due to a dispute over the investigation into the explosion in the port of Beirut on August 4 last year.
The man in charge of the investigation, Judge Tarek Elbitar (on the left side of the picture), is at the center of the drama. He reportedly intends to hold Hezbollah responsible for the blast and is therefore accused by Hassan Nasrallah and his men of "politicizing" the investigation.
Today, government ministers on behalf of Hezbollah and his allies intended to demand the dismissal of Elbitar and therefore the cabinet meeting was canceled. Hezbollah claims that if he is not fired, his people will retire from the newly formed government.
What is known about Tarek Elbitar? He was born in 1974 in the Akar area. In 2017 he was appointed President of the Criminal Court in Beirut. Previously, he served as the representative of the General Prosecution in northern Lebanon. He has no known political affiliation.
