Weapons on the Temple Mount: Saudi outrage over Palestinian desecration of al-Aqsa

Arutz7 April 24, 2022: Turning al-Aqsa into a weapons depot and battlefield and even hanging PLO flags in a mosque is against Islamic law. Saudi Arabia is angry.

We talked about this with the researcher of the Forum Kedem, historian Itamar Tzur.

TZur tells of the rage in Saudi Arabia over turning the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Temple Mount into a political compound and battlefield while it is supposed to be a site where such activities are prohibited by Islam. To get to know the historical background to the status of the Temple Mount in Islam, Itamar Tzur takes us back to the seventh century AD, even before the period of Islam. During this period, Arab tribes lived with common legislation, and among the laws was also the treatment of the Kaaba who was a goddess that those tribes believed in.

The Kaaba is in Mecca which was then a city of commerce and since "the worst thing for commerce is war, so they established the principle of harem, non-war, which made Mecca a city where tribes can congregate and discuss among themselves because war is forbidden there."

In his remarks, Tzur mentions that Haj Amin al-Husseini hid from the Mandatory regime in the Temple Mount compound on the understanding that the British army would not reach there out of respect for Islam or for fear of a Muslim response if military forces entered the mountain. For the same reason, Yasser Arafat was also offered to move to the Temple Mount when the section was intercepted by the IDF.

But Muslim rules have been violated and are violated almost every year, and as early as 101 years ago King Abdullah I of Jordan was assassinated in the mosque. In his remarks, Itamar Tzur notes that the approaching Independence Day is expected to take place exactly on the day of the end of Ramadan, on Eid al-Fitr, and this encounter between the dates may and may be dangerous and explosive without the prior preparation of security officials.

As mentioned, Tzur tells of anger in the Muslim world over the Palestinian behavior on the Temple Mount and the Al-Aqsa Foundation, and most of the anger comes from Saudi Arabia, which has two most sacred places in Islam and sees the third place, the Temple Mount, as a rival. In the Saudi media, Tzur says, there is sharp and open criticism against the introduction of weapons in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and against the football games there. This is considered blasphemy.
