Defense Minister Bnei Gantz yesterday (Monday) approved the appointment of Major General Tomer Bar, head of the multi-armed power planning and building division, to the position of commander of the Air Force. Bar will replace the current commander, Major General Amikam Nurkin, who has been in office since 2017. Bar's appointment comes as part of a series of appointments of the General Staff that was decided by Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi after a number of postponements in the placement discussions.
General Barr began his career as a fighter pilot on 16-F aircraft and then made a 15-F conversion. He commanded Squadrons 133 and 69. He then held a number of key positions, including flight school commander and commander of the Tel Nof base during Operation Pillar of Cloud, and when he was elected head of the Air Operations Squadron, senior corps officials realized he would be appointed Air Force commander in the future.
