Special IDF Report: The secret campaign conducted by the IDF - tens of meters underground

Very quietly and without the noise of battle, the IDF conducts a campaign in a dimension hidden from view.

We went down tens of meters to see what the world of the men and women soldiers working just below us looks like: in the Hamas tunnels, in the depths of the sea and in the room where the next step in combat is decided.

The way to "The Pit" in the Kirya includes passing more than five gates, showing identification, transferring a fingerprint, endless information security certificates and coordination of almost a month - and that is before the descent itself, tens of meters below the skyscrapers of Tel Aviv. This was the first proof we received, that the most important decisions and the biggest moves - the IDF leads deep from the bottom of the earth.

In almost every campaign, there is one issue that is not talked about: "everything that remains below the surface." But the truth is that the statement is not far from reality - for many years the IDF has not only invested in land, air, sea, cyber, spectrum or out of the atmosphere, and one of the main systems in general takes place underground.

We went out to check what the IDF looked like from below: in the Hamas tunnels, in the operational dives deep in the sea and in the room from which the fighting in all sectors is being conducted at the same time.

"The Pit"

If we could choose a date when we would go on a tour of the pit - we would arrive before a military emergency was declared. As soon as the secret order is received, the quiet corridors will become crowded, and in a few moments will be filled with uniformed men from all arms, commands, wings of the army and security bodies, rushing to their position in the High Command ("Mitzpa") - the IDF's main operations room.

Everyone who enters knows exactly where he is sitting, who his neighbors are and what his role is in power: to represent the place from which he came, to offer the help of the body behind him, to take down the command and update at any given moment the situation from that angle. That all those sitting turn to a series of screens, which are updated on all events in real time - from stone-throwing in Judea and Samaria to the advance of forces in the depths of the enemy.

The full room has great potential to become noisy, but thanks to special headphones, the MPA representatives communicate with each other without raising their voices. In the center of the space sits the conductor of the orchestra, who is the director of combat. He is responsible for generalizing the activity, coordinating between all bodies, reflecting the situation down to the general headquarters, lowering the operational orders and making the commotion of the campaign sound like a well-timed symphony.

In the back room are the symbols of the IDF's most central operations unit. They make sure that no event is missed and that every detail there is projected on the giant screens in the hall.

Upstairs is in an emergency the entire General Staff. Forum members receive regular reports from the CEOs and decide what the next moves will look like, which will affect the fate of the entire campaign.
