The Arab media, is reporting on a growing rift between Hamas and Iran. In fact, there are now two factions in Hamas, one pro-Iran, and one who wishes to return to the Sunni fold (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey). The reports take into account the fact that Hamas did not join the Iranian-proxy PIJ in fighting the IDF.
Against this background, reports surfaced recently about Mahmoud al-Zahar's desire to resign and leave the Strip.
Al-Zahar is one of Iran's biggest supporters. According to reports, in the near future Khalil al Haya, a senior Hamas official in the Gaza Strip, is scheduled to go to Tehran to try and bridge the gaps.
Of course, Hamas fears that distancing itself from Iran will lead to the cessation of military and financial aid just when it seems that Iran is about to benefit from an influx of billions following the renewal of the nuclear agreement.
