Overview of the organization

Al-Shabaab, or "Youth", is the official affiliate of al-Qaeda in East Africa. The terrorist organization that was founded in the late 1990s and wants to establish a fundamentalist Islamic state that will eventually expand and attack the entire Horn of Africa. Al-Shabab controls much of southern Somalia and small places in Kenya and Ethiopia along the Somali border. In areas under the control of the organization, al-Shabab imposes its stricter version of Sharia (Islamic law), and prohibits activities such as listening to music or shaving his beard. The organization carries out attacks mainly against the Somali government and the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM).

Following the group's oath of allegiance to al-Qaeda in 2012, al-Shabab began targeted attacks in Somalia's neighboring countries, including the September 2013 attack on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, which resulted in 68 deaths and 175 injuries.

The organization is also responsible for the attack on Garissa University in April 2015, in which five al-Shabab operatives stormed the university in Kenya, killing nearly 150 people. Since then, the organization has continued to try and carry out attacks outside the stronghold in Somalia.

In al-Shabab's first attempt to attack Western targets, the organization's operative detonated a bomb hidden by a laptop on a Daallo flight departing from Mogadishu to the city of Djibouti on February 2, 2016. The explosion, which killed only the terrorist, was not powerful enough. To take off the plane. Al-Shabab reportedly killed more than 4,200 people in 2016, defining the organization as the deadliest Islamic terrorist organization in Africa.

In October 2017, al-Shabab carried out the most serious terrorist attack in Somalia to date - a car bomb blast that killed more than 300 people in Mogadishu.

The Doctrine of Al-Shabab

Al-Shabab's ideology is usually described as a brand of selfishness and Wahhabism that supports heresy (expulsion of infidels or infidels). Although it has stated many goals in the past,
the group is fighting first and foremost to create a fundamentalist Islamic state in the Horn of Africa that will include not only Somalia but also Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia.
