The Rubin Museum
Experience art in Tel Aviv

The Rubin Museum is an artist-house-museum in the historical heart of Tel Aviv, formerly the home of the painter Reuven Rubin, where he resided with his family and worked from 1946 until his death in 1974. Constructed in 1930, the house on 14 Bialik St. opened to the public as a museum in 1983. A choice selection from the Museum’s permanent collection of Reuven Rubin’s paintings has been on display, replaced periodically by guest exhibitions focusing Israeli art.

Born in Rumania in 1893, Rubin came to Jerusalem to study art in Bezalel in 1912. He pursued his art studies in Paris, and returned to Palestine once again in 1923, to become one of Israel’s foremost artists, enthusiastically communicating in his art the Zionist transformation in modern Jewish history.

The tour through the exhibitions takes the visitor on a trip back to the early days of Tel Aviv and to the pioneering landscapes, where one gets to meet an engaging mosaic of the local inhabitants: Jewish pioneers, Arab farmers and fishermen, the Hasidim of Safed and the devout Jews of Jerusalem, all of whom had made their way onto Rubin’s canvases where they live in peaceful coexistence. With today’s perspective, his vibrant canvases can be regarded as a testimony to a significantly formative period which has, in so many ways, shaped modern Israel’s cultural identity.

There are 4 floors in the Museum: the children’s workshop is located on the basement level, opening to the backyard. The street level floor houses the main gallery, as well as the entry hall and the Museum’s shop. An additional gallery is located on the second floor, where the visitor will also find the library and reading room. Rubin’s own studio, preserved as it was in his life time is located on the third floor. This floor also houses a biographical display of photos, documents and sketches unfolding Rubin’s life-story, intertwined as it was with the local artistic and cultural scene.

Gallery Talks for groups of all ages. Special program for Taglit groups are offered in Hebrew, English, Spanish and Russian upon former notice. Audio-guides are also available in English, French and Hebrew.
