Saudi normalization matters — but Israel must not pay dangerous prices that endanger its security and future
Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords would be a major diplomatic achievement. It would signal clearly that the leading Arab and Muslim state accepts Israel as a legitimate and permanent member of the region. That message alone would reshape global perceptions of Israel’s place in the Middle East.
But Israel must not overestimate what this means — nor should it surrender vital strategic interests to complete the deal.
Reports claim that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has warned that if he fails to present a dramatically improved arrangement for Gazans, he could face severe consequences — whether political backlash or, as some speculate, even threats reminiscent of the fate of Egypt’s Sadat. From the outside, this sounds like an obstacle that could block normalization.
