A disturbing report from today claims that the Biden administration opposes the "Eastmed" pipeline designed to transport natural gas from the eastern Mediterranean basin to the European continent via Cyprus and Greece.
About two years ago, an agreement was signed between the three countries and the Israeli government approved it a few months later. At the time, the Trump administration supported the project.
According to the plan, the pipeline is to be the longest in the world - about 1,900 km and has the capacity to transport 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The construction of the project is expected to take several years and cost at least $7 billion.
According to the report, the US has informed Greece that it doubts the economic viability of the project and has also raised suspicions in the environmental field and fears that the pipeline will ignite a political crisis with Turkey.
It should be noted that the idea for the Eastmed pipeline is intended to provide Europe with another option for gas supply while reducing reliance on Russia.
