An American researcher of Iranian descent, Dr. Majid Rafizadeh, claims that the cost of preserving the Assad regime has cost the Iranians about $100 billion in total. A special article by Col. Pesach Milubani (retired)
There is indeed no reason for the Iranians to change their policy of taking over Syria, in parallel with Russian activity in this area. They still have important goals to achieve, both economically and in terms of security, also with Hezbollah, and especially with Israel.
Syria today is the front base established by the Iranians vis-à-vis Israel, and so far it does not appear that the attacks attributed to Israel against Iranian targets in Syria influence their decisions in this area. The payment they pay for this is probably not too expensive from their point of view.
It is therefore safe to assume that the new Iranian president, known for his extremist positions who is in line with the Supreme Leader's policy and the Revolutionary Guards, may take new steps to increase tensions in the region and undermine stability. There are also, in the background, Israeli threats to act against the Iranian nuclear program.
