An attack by Moroccan army drones on the Polisario forces inflicts heavy casualties

On Wednesday, the Polisario condemned a "Moroccan attack" by UAVs, which he said "left 12 civilians dead" in the buffer zone in Western Sahara, areas the front calls "liberated areas."

The Spanish newspaper El Diario quoted a source from Polisario as saying that the attack took place on November 15 in the Majak area of western Sahara.

The newspaper's source, who preferred to remain anonymous, denied that "a senior at the front was killed in the attack."

The attack, which was not confirmed or denied by the Moroccan side, comes in light of the great tension in the region after Algeria announced the killing of three of its citizens in a bombing attributed to the armed forces of Morocco, in Western Sahara.

Although there was no official response from the Moroccan authorities regarding the killing of the Algerians, a Moroccan source condemned to the AFP agency the false accusations against the kingdom, stressing that Morocco "did not attack and will not attack any Algerian citizen, regardless of circumstances and provocations".

Since the declaration of war resumption by the Polisario, there have been repeated reports of Moroccan attacks using UAVs, without any acknowledgment from Rabat.

In November 2020, the Polisario announced the termination of the ceasefire agreement signed in 1991, in response to a Moroccan military operation and the blockade of the only road leading to neighboring Mauritania, and the deployment of Moroccan forces in Western Sahara.

A decades-long conflict over Western Sahara is raging between Morocco and the Algerian-backed Polisario Front. But tensions escalated between the two neighbors after Morocco signed a tripartite agreement under which the United States would recognize its sovereignty over Western Sahara, in exchange for renewing Rabat's diplomatic relations with Israel at the end of last year.

The kingdom, which controls almost 80% of the vast desert region, offers to grant the POlisario autonomy under its sovereignty.
