Lebanon: The inconceivable economic gap

New data released by the UN shows, on the one hand, the doubling of poverty rates in Lebanon in about two years but also the huge disparities between population groups. According to the data, 82% of the population live in "multidimensional poverty". Access to health, education, and other public services is scarce.

The rate of multidimensional poverty in Lebanon has almost doubled in the last two years after reaching 42% in 2019. Most Lebanese's capital has eroded in the last two years due to the collapse of the currency value while rising by almost 300%.

Even so, alongside the severe poverty of most of the population, it appears that the top decile in Lebanon holds a capital of about $91 billion. If only a few percent of this capital had been allocated, some of the poverty could have been alleviated.
