"Liquidation sale" in Jordan?
Has the economic hardship of the Kingdom of Jordan led the authorities to sell selected assets that will put billions of dollars into its depleted coffers? Well, rumors have been circulating recently that, among other things, 2,700 dunams of land in the Nabataean city of Petra were sold to a tourism company for $ 3.2 billion.
Petra is a national asset of Jordan and blows into symbolism and therefore the sale of land there to foreigners can provoke popular opposition. Rumors were also circulating about the sale of properties in the city of Aqaba, including the airport there, to an investment fund from one of the Gulf states.
The issue of the sale was raised in a query from one of the MPs who asked if there was any truth in the rumors.
The answer he received in parliament from the government was of sweeping denial but we have already learned that there is no smoke without fire….
