US plan a buffer zone in south Syria

The Syrian south is making headlines after an American plan to revive cooperation with Syrian opposition factions in Daraa, combined with talks on establishing a buffer zone there.

The Lebanese newspaper Al-Modun has revealed that the aim of this plan is to pose a challenge to Russia, which has full control over the regime's forces in the region.

The paper stressed that since the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has warned of US and Western plans to undermine stability in regime-controlled areas by cooperating with opposition groups to carry out attacks in those areas against regime forces and the Russian and Iranian military.

The paper quoted opposition sources as saying that the United States had already begun talks with various elements in the opposition for this purpose, which was part of the agenda of a visit by US officials to Kurdish-controlled areas from the SDF.

America should keep itself out of influencing sectors within this area. Unless the Kurd's feel threatened by either Syria, Lebanon or Russians they should not be looking to America for aid.
