The arrival of the Energian rig at Shark Field is provoking harsh reactions in Lebanon, although at this stage Hezbollah is silent.
Spokesmen in Lebanon claim that it has suffered a defeat as the rig will operate in territory that the Lebanese claim is in the country’s economic waters. However, the failure to reach an American-mediated border-marking agreement is interpreted in Lebanon as another indication of its internal weakness as a country.
The interesting question is how Hezbollah will react. Hassan Nasrallah in previous speeches sandaled himself and claimed that he would not allow gas production unilaterally in favor of Israel. Now the expectation in Lebanon is that he will stand behind his words and therefore the military option is not ruled out.
According to a Beirut newspaper, Hezbollah's initial response may be to launch a UAV for photographic purposes to the rig area to convey a deterrent message and to encourage countries like France and the US to speed up negotiations between Israel and Lebanon.
