Bennett's visit to Egypt: Cold peace seems hotter than ever for a few hours

In three hours of close conversation, Bennett and al-Sisi talked about tensions in Gaza, relations with the Palestinian Authority, Iran, and security cooperation between Israel and Egypt. But most of all - the meeting dealt with the relationship between them. As in the first meeting with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, also in the meeting with the President of Egypt Bennett devoted quite a bit of time to develop a personal relationship.

Egyptian President al-Sisi will maintain a good personal relationship with Netanyahu. He knew him and knew how to work with him. During 2020, when Israel was in a political crisis and moving between election campaigns and a dysfunctional government, Netanyahu tried several times to organize an invitation for a public visit to Egypt. His requests were repeatedly rejected after he refused to accept the Egyptian request to accompany the visit with a tribute in the Palestinian territory.

In Bennett's case, the situation was reversed. The Egyptians are the ones who initiated his invitation for a public visit and did not demand any conciliation n on the Palestinian issue. The Egyptians made an unprecedented effort to publicize Bennett's visit. They have made a long line of public gestures that have not been seen in Israeli-Egyptian relations for the past 15 years. The cold peace between Israel and Egypt seems for a few hours hotter than ever.
