Egypt does not want to rebuild facilities and homes destroyed by Israel in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian sources said. They noted that Egypt, however, is carrying out some other vital projects in the Strip.
At a press conference on Sunday, Gaza Deputy Deputy Minister of Housing Naji Sarhan said that Egypt had begun construction of three residential complexes approved before the Israeli attack on Gaza in May 2021.
Sarhan added that Egypt is also carrying out two more projects, including the restoration of part of El Rashid Street and is preparing to build two bridges.
The Deputy Minister of Housing said that priority should be given at this stage to houses, shops and other facilities destroyed by Israel during the 11-day attack.
He said Qatar had begun renovating a number of homes, noting that it had allocated $50 million for rehabilitation plans.
Construction, according to Sarhan, is progressing very slowly due to the obstacles of the Israeli and Palestinian Authority to transfer funds to Gaza.
Meanwhile, he denied reports that grants had been allocated for the restoration of high-rise buildings destroyed by Israel.
Sarhan called on donors to set a time limit for completing the planning and reconstruction of the rubble that can and should be rebuilt.
Israel carried out a major attack on Gaza between May 11 and 21, killing more than 260 people and destroying 1,650 homes, as well as partially destroying more than 60,000 housing units.
The Ministry of Housing estimated the damage at about $420 million.
