The American Pilot Who Saved Tel Aviv
May 29, 1948 - American pilot Louis Lenart led the newly-formed Israel Air Force’s first combat mission, stopping an Egyptian attack on Tel Aviv during Israel’s War of Independence. Lenart and his 3 buddies led the assault, flying only 4 planes for a country that had no actual airforce.

They dropped 70-kg bombs on the Egyptian column and attacked them with gunfire. This assault convinced the Egyptians to retreat. There can be no doubt that Lenart helped turn the tide of the war, and saved Tel Aviv.

6 years ago, Lenart passed away in Israel. Today we remember this amazing hero. May his memory forever be a blessing.
