Israel opens new electric bus facilities

The Ministry of Transportation and the Dan bus company inaugurated a new electric bus charging facility, one of the largest in the world. Starting March 1, 2023, Bnei Brak will be the first city in Israel where all urban transportation will be operated by electric buses.

The new electric campus called “Operation Kadesh” is the only one in Israel designed entirely for charging electric buses. The complex, the construction of which cost about NIS 40 million ($11.5 million) is located near the Ramat Gan stadium and covers an area of about 3 acres.

The complex includes 120 stations for the charging of 120 buses at the same time. The Dan company will set up another 500 charging stations in 4 additional parking lots, which will serve the fleet of electric buses that the company will equip in the coming years.

The charging complex is being established as part of a plan by the Ministry of Transportation to develop public transportation centers that will support the expansion of service and the conversion of the national bus fleet to electric. The ministry is in the process of building 25 central stations, terminals and additional electric parking lots.

Over 500 new electric buses will be put into service this year, which will join the approximately 600 electric buses already operating today. By the year 2026, more than 2,500 electric buses will operate in Israel, representing more than 50% of the municipal fleet in the country.
