Erdogan approves continued purchase of Russian weapons despite US threats of further sanctions

During an exclusive interview with the Turkish network CBS NewsN this Saturday, the Turkish president said that Ankara will continue to purchase Russian weapons, especially the S-400 missile systems, despite US threats to impose economic sanctions on it.

Erdogan stressed that "in the future, no one will be able to intervene in the question of what defense systems each country has and its level", noting that "no one can intervene in this matter; we are the only ones making such decisions."

It is worth noting that the agreement for the supply of the Russian S-400 missile defense system to Turkey was signed in December 2017, in Ankara, Turkey's capital.

Under the agreement, Turkey will receive a partial loan from Russia to finance the purchase of the S-400 missile system.

Delivery of the system, which caused a crisis between Turkey and the United States, began in mid-July 2019.

Washington demanded that Ankara abandon this deal and promised in return to provide it with the American Patriot system.

The United States also revoked its agreement to sell the new Ap-35 stealth aircraft to Turkey and canceled many manufacturing contracts for parts for these aircraft.
