Special Report: IDF UAV Unit "Clearing the area for an attack"

The commander of 166 UAV Squadron, the Firebirds Squadron, which operates the large "Star" radar, Hermes 900, explains in an interview about the unit's activities and its importance in the fight against terrorism and maneuvering.

80% of the Air Force's operational flight hours are currently carried out by unmanned aerial vehicles. These hours are increasing as the UAV improves and the technologies advance. Drone are much cheaper than a plane and a helicopter, its flights saves lives and money, and the results are getting better and better.

"The are no unaccompanied assaults anymore", exoplains Lt. Col. Y., commander of 166 Squadron, The Firebirds Squadron, which operates the large "Star" radar, Hermes 900, made by Elbit Systems:

"We fly constantly over enemy field cells, and here lies the advantage of the drone, which can stay in the air for many hours and does not need landing, resting or refueling. Moreover, there is currently no IDF attack in the Gaza Strip, for example, that will not be accompanied by an IDF drone above in the sky.

That's why squadron's planes fly a lot, day and night, in all air conditions. Squadron 166 recently underwent a major change when it became the operator of only one type of aircraft – a star, a Hermes 900, while in the past it also operated others.

Lt. Col. Y. In a conversation with Israel Defense: "This change and the exclusivity of our aircraft have pushed the squadron forward with operational capabilities.

The squadron has "very successfully" undergone an operational competency review. The Star aircraft fulfills several missions: intelligence gathering, assistance to ground forces, and photographing infrastructure intelligence.

When a ground force advances on the ground, explains the squadron commander, "We escort it from above, make sure the terrain is clean of enemy and guard against hazards. The advanced camera in The Star will show the operators and commanders of the ground force the entire area to which they are advancing, and thus the force can prepare and advance to carry out its tasks."
