For the first time in more than half a century, Bahrain witnessed the marriage of a Jewish couple, in a move described on the Times of Israel website as a "milestone" for the Jewish community in the Gulf state, which established diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020.
Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, which have never fought against Israel, signed two agreements to normalize relations with Israel on September 15, 2020, ahead of Sudan and Morocco, which followed suit.
The wedding ceremony was held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Manama, which was trained with the help of the Orthodox Union, and the groom is the son of Huda Nano, a former Bahrain ambassador to the United States and a member of the Jewish community in Bahrain.
Ibrahim Daoud Nano, head of the Jewish community in Bahrain, said that "this wedding was an important moment for our family and the Jewish community in Bahrain and the region."
"The atmosphere was full of joy as we stood around the canopy symbolizing the new home," he added.
Israel's official Twitter account in Arabic also responded in a Twitter tweet, saying: "One of the fruits of peace between Israel and Bahrain! A rich Jewish life with the kingdom's first Jewish wedding in 52 years (..)".
According to the website, the leaders of the Jewish community welcomed the wedding as a sign of the re-emergence of Jews in Bahrain, and hoped that more young people would raise families there.
Although its population does not exceed 1.5 million, Bahrain has a Jewish community that has lived in the small bay for 140 years.
The event was also the first strictly kosher wedding in the Kingdom’s history and was arranged by the Orthodox Union, the world’s largest kosher certification agency.
Isn't peace wonderful?
