Sukkot guide 2021

The Jewish citizens of Israel will celebrate Sukkot, which was also held this year in parallel with the outbreak of the coronavirus. How will public transport operate, what restrictions have been imposed and how will the security forces be deployed? Everything you need to know before the holiday.

What are you celebrating?

The holiday of Sukkot is the third of the three customs, during which the mitzvah of sitting in the sukkah is observed. The first day of Sukkot, which will be celebrated starting in the evening, is "Yom Tov" and is followed by six weekdays. At the end of the holiday, on the 22nd of Tishrei, there is a Shemini Atzeret, which is a separate holiday, and there is no longer an obligation to sit in the sukkah.

On the holiday of Sukkot, Jews usually sit in the sukkah and entertain in it, a custom known as "Ushpizin." Apart from sitting in the sukkah, the most popular mitzvah on Sukkot is the mitzvah of taking the four species: lulav, etrog, myrtle and willow.

Are there any restrictions?

As every year, the Western Wall plaza prepares for the traditional Priests' Blessing and a pilgrimage from around the country during the week of Sukkot, this year while adhering to the guidelines of the Ministry of Health in light of dealing with the coronavirus. According to the outline formulated by the Corona Cabinet, arrival at the Western Wall during the holiday will be possible for the general public without a green pass.

How will the security forces be organized?

The defense establishment is preparing for Sukkot, and announced that a closure will be imposed on the territories today (Monday), starting at 4:00 p.m. The opening of the crossings and the removal of the closure will take place at midnight on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, subject to a situation assessment. IDF sources stressed that due to the large number of travelers during Sukkot throughout Judea and Samaria - and the expected friction between Israelis and Palestinians - the IDF is raising the level of vigilance and preparedness for fear of terrorist attacks by individual terrorists and organized infrastructure. To this end, the Judea and Samaria Division will be reinforced with combat forces.
