The United States will be providing additional financial assistance to the Lebanese army
Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Noland said Thursday that Washington will provide additional assistance to the Lebanese army to the amount of $67 million.
Noland revealed at a press conference in Lebanon that the Lebanese people deserve more than that, after six people were killed by gunfire in the capital, Beirut.
Noland met with President Michel Aoun, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Parliament Speaker Nabiya Berry and Foreign Minister Abdullah Bohaviv during her visit to Lebanon.
The visit was not affected by the bloody events that took place in the capital Beirut in the Tayuna area, resulting in 6 deaths and dozens injured.
After meeting with Aoun, Noland said the United States stands by Lebanon to help it face current economic and social challenges.
She added, "I hope that after the formation of the government, reforms will be made and parliamentary elections will be held."
Aoun, for his part, told the US official that Lebanon wants to resume "indirect" negotiations with Israel in order to demarcate the southern border to complete the oil and gas exploration process in the regional waters, noting that this will contribute to the country's economic recovery.
