"I did not betray!" - remembering IDF POW Uri Ilan

Uri Ilan was one of five elite IDF soldiers captured in Syria during a covert operation in 1955.

The soldiers were separated and brutally tortured for information, and were told by their Syrian captors that their comrades had been killed.
Rather than risk divulging information, Ilan hanged himself on January 13, 1955, using a rope he made from the bed sheet of his mattress cover.

Upon receiving Uri's body back, nine scribbled notes were found hidden in the lining his clothing, the most famous of which read: "I did not betray. I committed suicide."
May his memory be a blessing.
