Danish authorities have informed hundreds of Syrian refugees that their residence permits have been revoked or their applications rejected, since the Danish government decided that conditions in the Damascus area had "improved".
Denmark has pursued a strict reception policy towards refugees, with the aim of achieving "zero asylum seekers", and has issued temporary residence permits only since 2015.
The Danish government has been widely criticized at the international level, against the background of the denial of residence permits by Syrian refugees, for seeing the situation in the Damascus region as "safe", as the UN said it was "unjustified".
Earlier this year, the Danish Minister of Immigration and Integration, Matthias Tespai, faced harsh criticism from EU parliamentarians over his country's policy of abolishing the refugee status of some Syrian refugees and forcing them to return to Damascus.
