Morocco is expected to announce soon the first import of liquefied natural gas (LNG). All this is happening after Algeria shut down gas supplies to Morocco late last year due to deteriorating relations between the two neighboring countries. Morocco has been importing gas from Spain, however, in order for its electricity sector to operate normally, it needs to import more liquefied natural gas.
According to experts, Morocco has two options. The first import of LNG from the United States. This will be done through Spain where the gas will return to its natural state and flow through a pipeline to Morocco as the North African country does not have the facilities needed for direct absorption of LNG.
The second but less plausible option is to import from Israel according to the following outline: Egypt will import the gas from Israel where it will pass through the pipes, be exported to Spain and from there through a pipeline after converting it back to its natural state. Spain is already importing LNG from Egypt and most recently it happened in May 2022 through the port of Damietta.
However, experts estimate that the option from Israel is more expensive compared to imports from the US.
