An agreement recently signed by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for the development of a new gas field in the Gulf waters is not being accepted quietly by Iran.
A few days ago, the two Arab countries signed an agreement for the development of a "Dre" field in which reserves are estimated at 20 trillion cubic feet (in an amount similar to Israel's "Leviathan" field). Production is expected to reach 1 billion feet a day and the two countries are expected to share it.
Tehran was quick to define this agreement as "illegal."
In Iran this field is called "Arash" and its interest is discussed in the context of Kuwait's and Iran's attempts to determine the maritime borders between them.
The Iranians claim that the agreement Kuwait signed with Saudi Arabia is a violation of the negotiations and add that they will work to produce the gas themselves. The Iranians, however, have left an opening for a joint production of the three countries.
