A week after the publication in Ynet of the order to seize dozens of digital wallets that traded with money changers who laundered capital and transferred it to the terrorist organization, Hamas stopped collecting donations in the crypto currency.
The military wing of Hamas, Ezz a-Din al-Qassam, announced yesterday that it will stop collecting donations in the Bitcoin currency due to "concern for the safety of the donors and fear of harming them".
The step came after Defense Minister Yoav Galant last week signed the confiscation of half a million shekels in the cryptocurrency from wallets and digital accounts that traded with money changers previously declared by Israel to be terrorist organizations due to their involvement in money laundering and transferring them to Hamas.
The Israeli security establishment said that this is a significant milestone in the fight against terrorist financing in general, and crypto in particular.
The activity was attended by the Headquarters for Economic Warfare against Terrorism (EMT) at the Ministry of Defense, in collaboration with AMN, the Israel Police's Barak Unit 433, the Cyber Department at the Prosecutor's Office, the Israel Police's Confiscation Unit and the Authority for the Prohibition of Money Laundering.
