Business Insider: The Assad regime secretly stole $100 million from the UN donation

Business Insider released a report that revealed that the Assad regime had stolen huge amounts of aid provided by the UN, taking advantage of the dollar gap.

The website writes: "The Syrian regime secretly stole $100 million from the UN donation by manipulating the exchange rates."

"The Assad regime has been under severe sanctions for years, which means it cannot generate revenue through trade with countries like the US, UK and the EU."

"His assets, valued at millions of dollars, have been frozen at banks in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East, and as a result, the Syrian regime's central bank has taken illegal measures to generate capital."

"As every year, the United Nations sent millions of dollars in aid to Syria to alleviate poverty, and the Assad regime deliberately stole the aid through the official dollar exchange rate at its central bank, which at the time was between 2,500 and 1,500 Syrian pounds, while the dollar exchange rate was 3,500 pounds." .

Analysts estimate, the newspaper reported, that the Assad regime stole 50% of the aid sent by the UN in 2020, and managed to earn $100 million in 2019 from the revenues that came as a result of the theft of humanitarian aid.

It is worth noting that the Assad regime has a record of stealing humanitarian aid and sending it to its army, including the discovery of 1,000 aid packages at the headquarters of one of its militias in the city of Kamishli.
