100 days of Bennett

In the first 100 days of office, Bennett and Lapid emphasized the differences between them and the former prime minister, certainly regarding relations with the US or Jordan. But it is too early to judge: the two have not yet faced a significant crisis and enjoy the fact that many countries prefer to preserve the new government. This honeymoon will not last long.

In the last decade that Benjamin Netanyahu has served as prime minister, the defense establishment has spent weeks leading up to the UN General Assembly preparing satellite images of Hezbollah missile plants, data on the Iranian nuclear program, and fresh intelligence to include in his speech at the event. When senior members of the defense establishment and the intelligence community approached the Prime Minister's Office in recent days to see if any materials needed to be prepared for Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's speech next week, they responded with a polite negative response.

Like Netanyahu, Bennett is expected to talk about the Iranian issue, his policy in the Middle East, and his attitude toward Israel in UN institutions, but unlike the former prime minister, he intends to present things in a different way. In Israel, like his expected speech at the UN, in the first hundred days of the government, Bennett wants to manage political issues differently than Netanyahu. In terms of style, he has so far managed to be the opposite of Netanyahu; As for the essence - the change is only partial.

The most important point at which Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid wanted to highlight the difference between them and Netanyahu in the first hundred days was relations with the United States. With Joe Biden sitting in the White House and Democrats dominating the House of Representatives and the Senate it is not a particularly difficult challenge. Biden and his advisers - all graduates of the Obama administration - well remembered his strained relations with Netanyahu and his involvement in American politics. The White House made no effort to hide their satisfaction that Netanyahu had left the post and their willingness to help his young replacement. Only two hours passed from the moment Bennett was sworn in as prime minister until he received the congratulatory call from Biden. Just for comparison, Netanyahu waited a month after Biden's inauguration for the new president to return his phone call.

From their first day in office, Bennett and Lapid emphasize that, unlike Netanyahu, they will handle the disputes with the United States in a discreet manner, and will not conduct public battles against the US administration. Both also put the restoration of relations with the Democratic Party and the return of bipartisan support to Israel at the top of their priorities. After 12 years in which Netanyahu put most of his love for the Republicans, this will be a difficult task.

With regard to the Palestinian Authority, Bennett implemented a significant policy change in the first hundred days of his tenure. For years, Netanyahu has stated that he supports a Palestinian state and is interested in negotiations with Palestinian President Abu Mazen, but in practice has done nothing to advance the issue and has even worked to weaken the Palestinian Authority. , But on the other hand, stated that he would take steps to reduce the conflict and improve the situation on the ground. The most notable move was the meeting between Defense Minister Bnei Gantz and the PA chairman approved by Bennett, but these were also first meetings in years between Israeli and Palestinian ministers, the granting of 15,000 additional work permits in Israel to Palestinian workers, and a declaration of a desire to integrate the PA into any Gaza rehabilitation process.
