Meet the "Pablo Escobar" of the Assad family

I have previously written here about the drug industry that somehow saves the Syrian economy from folding in recent years. The New York Times is now reporting extensively on the issue, claiming that the key player in this industry is the younger brother of President Bashar, Maher, commander of Division 4. Of course, Hezbollah also plays a key role in this industry.

The paper notes that this industry is successful because it is supported by a state that has no interest in fighting the phenomenon. Also Syria's location and its borders with countries like Jordan and Iraq are helping to spread drugs in the region.

The one who is suffering from the increase in smuggling attempts is Jordan. Hassan al-Quda, the head of the Jordanian General Security Drugs Department, was quoted in the newspaper as saying that all drug factories in Syria are in the territories controlled by Maher's division and under its protection.
