Director of the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate (EGID) Maj. Gen. Abbas Kamel will arrive in Israel on May 30 for discussions on maintaining the ceasefire agreement between Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
Kamel is expected to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Security Advisor Meir Ben Shabbat and other security establishment officials.
The Egyptian official is further slated to visit Ramallah and meet Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas.
On Monday his scheduled trip will shift to the Gaza Strip where he is expected to convene with Hamas officials for a round of talks.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi will make the opposite trip to Cairo for talks on the Israeli-Palestinian subject. He is expected to meet with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry. It will be the first visit of an Israeli foreign minister to the Egyptian capital since 2008.
An Israeli official, under anonymous terms, said that the Egyptians are interested to initiate a peace process that will include rehabilitation of the Palestinian enclave, renewal of Israeli-PA negotiations, and advancing talks on resolving the Israeli captives held by Hamas.
