BREAKING! The IDF commando unit that sets up an operating room miles deep in enemy territory

Among the many medical squads trained to cross enemy lines in the next campaign and rescue wounded backwards - there is one team, which sets up operating rooms and intensive care units at depths that the commando division reaches, performs complex treatments and works "counterclockwise"

The commando brigade unites under it the three special units (Egoz, Magllan and Duvdevan), will soon celebrate 6 years of activity and still manages to surprise. From covert operations as part of an operational routine, through the unique capabilities it holds, to the preparations for Command Day - which often cross the boundaries of the imagination.

The commando unit has a special mission - in the next war they will fight deep in enemy territory, at points far from the "classic" battlefield. In such a situation, where it is not possible to "turn back" and get to a hospital in Israel quickly - an alternative is needed that will not only know how to perform complex treatments and life-saving surgeries, but will also be able to keep the wounded alive for a long time until rescue.

Indeed, the question of treating the wounded is one of the main ones that has occupied the medical corps since its inception. "The significance is enormous and the challenge even more so," emphasizes the commando corps, Captain D.

In response, the brigade, together with the medical corps, set up the Hira (Air Medicine Unit) - a squad consisting of dozens of doctors, nurses and reservists - who will know how to land from the air and open a temporary hospital in the middle of the battlefield. ", Major Y., commander of the HRA," boasts an intensive care unit that works around the clock, to two operating rooms that can be opened at the same time. "

The IRA team consists of graduates of special units who studied medicine after the liberation and returned to work in their field within the unit: surgeons, senior doctors, anesthesiologists, ENT doctors, etc. In the intensive care unit. "The battlefield vulnerability requires you to be sharp and precise at every step. We selected the best doctors for the task and made the adjustment for the operational need, "explains the unit commander.

Unusually, due to the great distance from available evacuation, doctors have to leave the wounded in the temporary hospital for a long time, which forces them to prepare for complicated scenarios, such as those that are not treated in any other medical cell in the IDF.

One of the most familiar and complicated is the area of ??internal injuries: "The military procedure when detecting internal bleeding in one of the fighters is to evacuate as soon as possible," explains the divisional medical officer. Who knows how to do it deep in enemy territory. "

On the battlefield, the operational picture can change completely at any given moment. Despite the cliché, Major Y. says that they are preparing for every possible change - a complex confrontation with patients lying on the operating room bed. "The situation does not allow us to remain static. We must also know how to deal with the possibility of folding and shifting in the middle of the campaign. This is an almost impossible challenge in the eyes of medical teams."

"The HRA works the opposite of the combat clock," explains the commando corps. "When the warriors rest between battles we are just starting our most woody part, which sometimes lasts even a few days."

Even during the development stages of the unit, IDF medical personnel understood that the medical response to the fighters must begin at the critical moments - which take place at the front of the battle. To this end, they added a new role to their ranks: Loram (a fighter in operational medicine).

The fighters selected for the position are sent to a dedicated course even in the early stages of training, and become skilled therapists. Beyond their combat role, they are empowered to provide broader and more comprehensive care to the wounded in real time, and to transfer them to the IRA.

At the beginning of the month, as part of the commando's brigade training, the members of the IRA met for the annual training in Tze'elim.

"There is no limit to the scenarios we prepare for. Nothing happens exactly as in planning, we prepare for the worst, but with our skilled staff, who are exceptionally dedicated to the operational work, and know how to stabilize even in the busiest times, the feeling is that the sky is the limit," says Commander The unit.
