Meir Har-Zion was born in Herzliya in 1934. He was drafted to the Nachal Infantry Brigade of the IDF and was later hand-picked by Ariel Sharon to be in the IDF's nascent elite commando unit, Unit 101.
Har-Zion participated in many military operations and excelled above all others so much so that then Chief of Staff Moshe Dayan granted him title of officer without having gone to officer’s training school - an unprecedented move in the IDF.
In 1955 Har-Zion was awarded the Medal of Courage for his exceptional command over his squad of commandos during Operation Olive Leaves. In the following year, Meir was wounded in the neck and was saved by the company doctor who performed an emergency tracheotomy while under fire.
Although he was injured, Har-Zion still fought in the Six Day War and led a squad of reservists who fought alongside the Paratroopers in the battle for the Old City of Jerusalem. During the Yom Kippur War, Captain Har-Zion fought on the Golan front, rescuing injured soldiers behind Syrian enemy lines.
Meir passed away on March 14, 2014.
