Does the Egyptian plan to rehabilitate Gaza disguise its recapture of the Strip?

Under the headline "Does Egypt intend to regain control of the Gaza Strip?" The Jerusalem Post published a report raising questions about Egypt's intentions to "regain control" of the Gaza Strip, in light of its participation in the reconstruction of the Strip after 11 days of severe military escalation, the most violent with the Israeli side since 2014.

Egypt, a neighbor of the Gaza Strip, managed to reach a ceasefire agreement on May 21, after extensive contacts with various elements to restore the truce between Israel and Hamas, which Cairo played a key role in establishing and renewing over and over again.

The newspaper believed that the sights of the dozens of Egyptian bulldozers and trucks that entered the Gaza Strip last Friday prompted some Palestinians to ask whether Egypt plans to return to the Strip it controlled between 1948 and 1967.

On June 4, official television reported that Egypt had sent engineering equipment and technical personnel to the Gaza Strip, under the instructions of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to begin the reconstruction process in the Strip.

Dozens of bulldozers, cranes and trucks carrying Egyptian flags floating on the border to begin crossing Gaza were seen in state television footage.

On the other hand, Ayman Selma, a member of the Egyptian Foreign Affairs Council and an expert in international law, confirms to the American news site Al-Hura that "the historical heritage of Egyptian-Palestinian relations and the Gaza Strip in particular cannot be ignored."

Salameh believed that "Egypt now plays a strategic role and that its historical role, and the legal and realistic nature that existed between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, could not be separated," noting that "Egypt did not annex the Gaza Strip during the period 1948-1967."

He explained that "despite the appointment of a military governor in Gaza by Egypt to conduct affairs there, at the time, the documents and courts in Egypt, for all their decisions, confirm that the Strip was never considered part of Egypt."

The American newspaper quoted Palestinian sources as saying that "the presence of Egyptian construction teams in the Gaza Strip means that Hamas and other Palestinian factions will not be able to resume missile attacks on Israel."

Egypt is currently contributing to construction work in the devastated neighborhoods, after announcing a $ 500 million grant as an initiative dedicated to rehabilitating the Gaza Strip, in addition to the presence of Egyptian medical staff during the Israeli bombings, which killed at least 230 people, including 61 children and more than 1,710. .

The sources explained to the newspaper that "it will be difficult for Hamas to launch another round of fighting with Israel in light of the presence of many Egyptians in the Gaza Strip."

The U.S. will send more $$ to Egypt to cover the grant.

If Egypt gets paid for reconstruction, Hamas does not see the money and it actually goes where it should.
