Preliminary analysis of sanctions and what to expect in Washington

The Ukrainian leadership is disappointed with the sanctions announced by the US administration tonight. In Kiev demanded Russia's disconnection from the international payment system SWIFT, sanctions on the Russian energy sector, sanctions on the big banks and personal sanctions on Putin.

Of all these, the Biden government agreed to impose sanctions on two large banks and other financing institutions and also focused on stopping the export of technologies to the Russian market. The list of US sanctions also includes some names of personalities closest to Putin, including in Belarus.

The West has more economic punitive measures against Russia that it has meanwhile avoided. It is estimated that the next round of sanctions, including a personal one on President Putin, will have to wait until the Russians take over Kiev. Currently, the "balance of terror" against Russia prevents sanctions on the Russian energy sector that could cause severe damage to the Western economy.

And outside the US, the UK is the first country in the West to today announce sanctions on Russia's national airline Aeroflot. As of today, the company's aircraft are not allowed to use UK airspace.
